Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn prediction

The wait is almost over, and at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tonight Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn will contest the latest meeting in a family rivalry that stretches back decades.

The two fights between Chris Eubank Snr and Nigel Benn were classic affairs that are now firmly etched in British boxing folklore and this showdown between the sons has a lot to live up to.

Eubank Jr is the clear favourite and his price has shortened up as fight night approaches, while both men have vowed to knock the other out, and the judges may not be required

Benn has made the jump up to middleweight, having spent the majority of his career at welterweight. The Destroyer is the younger and fresher fighter, and he boasts an unbeaten record after 23 fights, but this could be a step too far.

Eubank Jr is 34-3 but it is worth noting that all of his losses have come against fighters who have at one stage of their careers been world champions - Billy Joe Saunders, George Groves and Liam Smith. The 35-year-old may no longer be at his best, but Eubank Jr’s size advantages and greater experience suggest he should be able to get the job done.

The step up from welterweight to middleweight is a huge jump and the likes of Amir Khan and Kell Brook have both failed to bridge that gap before. If Benn is to pull off an upset his best method of attack is probably to make use of his speed, move in and out of range and try to avoid getting dragged into a war with the bigger man, but he has continually stressed he intends to take the fight to Eubank Jr and that could prove to be a huge mistake.

If Benn decides to stand and trade then a stoppage for Eubank Jr is the most likely outcome. The Brighton boxer isn’t necessarily one of the middleweight division’s heaviest hitters but he still boasts a KO rate of just under 74 per cent and he clearly has more power than anyone Benn has faced professionally.

Even if Benn’s pre-fight talk is all mind-games or bravado and he is really planning to try box clever, Eubank Jr can still win inside the distance. In terms of ability, Eubank Jr is perhaps a little underrated as he knows how to put combinations together, has a reliable jab and moves well, and he should be able to catch Benn with some good shots on the way in.

A Eubank Jr stoppage looks the standout bet for this grudge match and a small stake on the more experienced man to win in the second half is a bigger value option. Eubank Jr doesn’t have the kind of power that sees him end many fights in one visit and he usually gets his stoppages after an accumulation of shots landed, and that is more likely to happen from round seven onwards.
