Fight preview
There’s a huge domestic dust-up on Saturday night as Chris Eubank jnr and Liam Williams get it on in Cardiff.
There are no titles on the line at the Motorpoint Arena but this should be a tremendous middleweight tussle.
As always Eubank reprises the role of the showman, but the Hove hitter is also an extremely tough fighter. Next Gen has lost just two of his 33 professional bouts and those defeats came against world champions.
It’s fair to say Eubank took on Billy Joe Saunders a little too early in his career, and although Next Gen was also beaten by George Groves, his desire and durability were there for all to see in that contest.
Eubank is a talented boxer but the reality of his talents certainly differ from his outlandish claims. Next Gen doesn’t boast huge one-shot power and he isn’t a knockout machine, but he does have a high-punch output, throws solid combinations and boasts a good chin.
Williams demonstrated his durability when recovering from a shaky start to take the unbeaten Demetrius Andrade the distance last year. The Welshman was enjoying the most productive spell of his career before gaining his first world title shot, but he has previously twice come up short against Liam Smith.
What the Machine lacks in class, he certainly makes up for in heart, although it’s possible he may have met his match in Eubank.
It’s worth remembering that Next Gen has impressed in wins against Avni Yildirim, Arthur Abraham and James DeGale, and while those fighters may have been past their peak, it’s still a solid record.
The money has come for Eubank and the Hove hitter has shortened from 4-9 to 1-3. However, there could still be a bit of value in the 13-8 about Eubank winning via decision.
Williams is the bigger puncher, but Eubank is likely to dominate a fight that should go to the final bell.
