Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull prediction

An incredible weekend of boxing continues on Saturday as Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez faces William Scull in a super-middleweight unification bout.

This will be Canelo’s customary Cinco de Mayo weekend outing, but there is a difference this year as he is making his Riyadh debut in the first of a four-fight deal.

With a bout with Terence Crawford expected to be announced imminently, potentially even immediately after Saturday’s contest is over, it isn’t a huge shock to see Canelo involved in what looks a bit of a mismatch.

Scull is unbeaten and holds the IBF belt, but the 32-year-old doesn’t appear to be kind of fighter that should pose problems for the Mexican.

Scull fights with the typical Cuban style, making his opponents miss and then working on the counter, but Canelo is a supreme technician and won’t be drawn into any traps.

This match-up offers Canelo a chance to record a first stoppage since his victory over Caleb Plant back in 2021 but another wide points win is the more likely result.

Canelo is a fighter who prefers not to take any risks and he should be able to win this comfortably without having to go looking for a grandstand finish, so a sixth successive unanimous-decision win for the WBA, WBC and WBO champion stands out.

The best bet of the night comes on the undercard where Badou Jack can prevail as a slight underdog against Norair Mikaeljan in a WBC cruiserweight title fight.

Mikaeljan took this fight at relatively short notice, replacing the injured Ryan Rozicki around a month ago, and that may work against him. The fact Jack hasn't fought for over two years is a concern, but Mikaeljan didn't have a bout in 2024 either so potential ring rust is an issue for both.

Interestingly, both men faced the same opponent, Ilunga Junior Makabu, last time out and Mikaeljan had the "better" result as he won in the third round and Jack won in the 12th. That may be why the Armenian is the favourite but Jack has a full training camp behind him and that gives him the edge.
