Ben Whittaker vs Benjamin Gavazi predictions
Birmingham's Ben Whittaker will be hoping to signal his world title intent when he makes his debut for the Matchroom stable in front of a packed home crowd at the NEC.
The 28-year-old left Boxxer in October to try and take his career to the next level and Germany's Benjamin Gavazi stands in his way in the West Midlands on Saturday night.
Whittaker's career has been plain sailing since his professional debut in 2022 and the Surgeon has vowed to put on a clinic against Gavazi.
The German's record reads impressively – he has lost only one of 20 fights and 13 of his 19 victories have come via knockout – but he has never mixed it with anyone of Whittaker's quality and there's no way that Eddie Hearn would risk putting the Brummie in with a dangerous opponent on his Matchroom debut.
Whittaker has been clinical since working under Andy Lee and he should be able to wear down Gavazi after a few rounds and record a routine early victory.
Gavazi has shown previously that he can be flat-footed and, if he stands in the pocket, Whittaker has the tools to ruthlessly break him down.
Six of the Brit's nine wins have come inside the distance and, at 28 years of age, Whittaker does not have any time to waste if he wants to throw himself in the hat for a world title shot in 2026.
Elsewhere on Saturday, boxing returns to the BBC as Frazer Clarke challenges Jeamie 'TKV' Tshikeva for the vacant British heavyweight title at Derby's Vaillant Live.
Former amateur star Clarke is looking to build momentum after beating Ebenzer Tetteh in April and he should be able to overcome Tshikeva.
Clarke has seven knockout wins from 11 outings but he cannot afford to be reckless against TKV, who has a solid jab and uses it to dictate the pace of fights.
That said, Clarke has the greater pedigree and a better skillset so should be able to outclass his opponent before targeting bigger fights next year.
