Anthony Cacace vs Leigh Wood predictions
Leigh Wood looked to have the world at his feet after stopping Josh Warrington in the seventh round in October 2023 but he hasn’t fought since and he faces a tough task against IBO super featherweight champion Anthony Cacace on Saturday night.
Injuries, a change of promoter and issues with venues have resulted in a long layoff for Leigh-thal and that potentially puts him at a big disadvantage against in-form Cacace.
Cacace is 23-1 and his solitary defeat came in 2017. He has won eight fights since and become a world champion. The Belfast-native will be the away fighter in Wood’s hometown of Nottingham but he’s had only one fight in Ireland since 2015, so that shouldn’t be a major issue.
Since Wood last fought, the Apache has picked up a pair of huge wins as he stunned the highly-rated Joe Cordina in Riyadh and then outpointed Warrington in his two outings in 2024.
Cacace goes into Saturday’s fight in fine form, whereas Wood is moving up from featherweight and jumping back in against top-level opposition after a long layoff. Cacace should be able to justify favouritism and a decision win looks the most likely outcome. Only eight of his 23 wins have come inside the distance.
The standout bet for Saturday night’s boxing comes from the Pechanga Arena in San Diego where Emanuel Navarrete is defending his WBO super featherweight title against unbeaten Filipino Charly Suarez, and the Mexican can pick up another KO win.
Navarette is 39-2-1 with 32 KOs and he became the first man to stop durable compatriot Oscar Valdez in his last bout. Suarez is unbeaten but he has not faced anyone near Vaquero’s level before and there is a good chance the judges won’t be required.
