Bookies right to make Kyren Wilson title favourite
Ebdon and Ursenbacher could enjoy decent runs in Germany
Starts 8.30am Friday
The market for the Paul Hunter Classic, which gets going in earnest on Friday morning, has an unfamiliar look to it with only seven previous ranking-event winners travelling to Furth for the £20,000 event.
Even though he heads a market that includes Shaun Murphy and Jack Lisowski, world number nine Kyren Wilson is difficult to ignore.
Two seasons ago Wilson landed his first major trophy in the Shanghai Masters and it's a little surprising he hasn't added to that success.
He performed well last season, reaching the finals of the Masters, English Open and World Open, and he also ran John Higgins close in their Betfred World Championship semi-final.
Wilson has kicked off this term brightly with a quarter-final run in the Riga Masters before being pipped by in-form Lisowski at the last-16 stage in the World Open.
It is difficult to see many early stumbling blocks for the Warrior. Xiao Guodong and Robert Milkins, ranked 26th and 31st, are the noteworthy opposition in his quarter of the draw but they may have to battle it out to set up a clash with Wilson.
In the wide-open top half, where defending champion Michael White needs to step things up to figure, a chance can be taken on a couple of lively outsiders with contrasting experience.
Peter Ebdon, Crucible king in 2002, endured a horrid 2017-18 season but has won four of his six matches this term and could well outrun his huge odds.
The Force still has a fierce competitive edge at 47 which could stand him in good stead.
Swiss potter Alexander Ursenbacher is a bright talent who is in good nick and has already been supported after being handed a decent draw.
Last week he rolled over Michael White to qualify for the European Masters and he could do so again if the duo reach the last 16 in Furth.
