Real Madrid loss saves bookmakers' bacon
Shock Betis win scuppers massive multiples
All five League Cup good things obliged to make it a great night of domestic action for favourite backers but Real Madrid's shock defeat to Real Betis stopped a complete meltdown in the bookmaking industry with one firm alone reporting it saved them a payout just shy of £20m.
Betis, 28-1 shots, grabbed a last-gasp winner at the Bernabeu in a 1-0 counter-attacking success as Madrid laid siege to the visitors' goal.
"I estimate that goal saved us close to a £20m payout," said bet365's Steve Freeth.
"When you hear of a last-minute winner at the Bernabeu then nine times out of ten you're braced for the worst but Betis somehow ensured we came out of a night that looked like a bookmaking minefield generally unscathed bar a few bumps and bruises."
Coral's David Stevens added: "Wednesday night's coupon always had the potential to end ugly for bookmakers, and when Sevilla took the lead late on against Las Palmas, following wins for all five League Cup jollies and Celtic, we were staring down the barrel of a substantial midweek hammering."
"It was still a good night for plenty of punters, but bookmakers were raising a glass to Betis, who prevented it from being a whole lot more costly."
Arsenal (1-9), Chelsea (1-7), Everton (3-10), Manchester United
(1-10) and Manchester City (4-11) all won in the League Cup and
1-4 shots Celtic were successful in their Betfred Cup tie at Dundee.
It was a similar story across Europe with Roma (7-19), Juventus
(4-11), Milan (1-4) and Sevilla (4-9) landing the odds, while there were also away wins for big names like Napoli (10-9) and Atletico Madrid (13-10) which had boosted the odds of many accumulators before Real Madrid were turned over at odds of just 1-8 in the final match to finish on the continent.
