Betfred World Matchplay preview
After a year in Milton Keynes the World Matchplay is back at the brilliant Winter Gardens and with fans returning to Blackpool it promises to be a superb occasion.
The top 16 players on the PDC Order of Merit are joined by the top 16 chuckers on the ProTour Order of Merit not to have already qualified, and that has led to a tasty looking draw.
Gerwyn Price is the number one seed and 5-1 joint-favourite to land the crown. However, the Iceman hasn’t been past the first round in this event in the last four years and the Welshman is housed in the same quarter as in-form arrowsmiths Jonny Clayton and Dirk van Duijvenbode plus the defending champion Dimitri van den Bergh.
Offers of 5-1 about Michael van Gerwen would have been the stuff of dreams not long ago but MVG just isn’t performing consistently enough to warrant support, even at those inflated odds.
Jose de Sousa has been producing some incredible numbers on the Pro Tour and the Special One is number one in terms of averages at the moment. However, the third quarter looks an extremely tough section and there doesn’t seem a great deal of value in the 7-1 on offer.
One price that does look to provide some excellent value is the 66-1 about Brendan Dolan. The History Maker is inside the top ten on the Pro Tour in terms of averages this term and he seems to be slipping under the radar. The Enniskillen thrower made a final of one of the recent Summer Series events and that followed an excellent win in the Players Championship 5 event back in March.
Dolan has shown he can perform on the big stage by reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championship and final of the World Grand Prix in the past and he looks to have benefited from a decent-looking draw in Blackpool.
The History Maker has a tough opener against Krzysztof Ratajski, but there’s little to fear from the three other seeds in the section - James Wade, Rob Cross and Glenn Durrant - and there’s plenty to like about the 66-1.
Stephen Bunting won the Players Championship 17 event last week and the Bullet is a quality operator when confidence is high. The St Helens man beat the likes of Price, Van den Bergh and Raymond van Barneveld to scoop that title and he followed that up with a quarter-final effort in the next event.
The Bullet has been performing at a decent level all season and the fourth section is full of players that have plenty to prove at the moment. Bunting can come through his first-round tie against Gary Anderson and outrun outright odds of 80-1.
