Day five preview

Amanda Anisimova v Naomi Osaka

Two-time Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka is on course to meet top seed Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round of the Grand Slam but she could face some resistance from youngster Amanda Anisimova on day five of the tournament.

Osaka, who missed most of the 2021 season after taking a break to focus on her mental health, has barely been tested in her first two matches in Melbourne, swatting aside Madison Brengle and Camila Osorio in straight sets.

But 20-year-old Anisimova could pose a challenge, having won the Gippsland Trophy earlier this month and she also dispatched 22nd seed Belinda Bencic in the previous round.

She could prove to be Osaka's toughest opponent yet in 2022 and a bet on there to be at least 21 games in the match looks a decent move, with four of Anisimova's last seven contests having surpassed that total.

Carlos Alcaraz v Matteo Berrettini

Novak Djokovic's absence in Melbourne has opened the door to some rising stars to shine in the men's draw and one player looking to capitalise is 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz.

The maestro from Murcia has looked fearless in the tournament so far, winning both of his opening matches against Alejandro Tabilo and Dusan Lajovic without dropping a set.

And last year's Next Gen ATP Finals winner will know the soft nature of his section means victory over Matteo Berrettini in the third round would give him a great chance of making the last four.

Wimbledon 2021 runner-up Berrettini will not be an easy opponent for Alcaraz but the Italian has lost sets in both of his matches against unseeded Americans Stefan Kozlov and Brandon Nakashima and lost two of his three matches at this month's ATP Cup.

Sebastian Korda v Pablo Carreno Busta

Sebastian Korda was on the brink of defeat to Corentin Moutet in the Australian Open second round, with his opponent serving for the match at 5-4 in the fourth set, but punters should not let that put them off backing the American starlet against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Korda recovered to win 3-6 6-4 6-7 7-5 7-6 and the character and aggression shown in his comeback win was promising.

In the first round, he dispatched British number one Cameron Norrie in straight sets and, although this is his Australian Open debut, he was boys' singles champion in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

And the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up can take confidence from the fact Carreno Busta was also taken to five sets by unseeded Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.

At odds-against, Korda is worth chancing to record another statement win.
