Preview

Frances Tiafoe has been producing better performances in recent weeks, but he may need that in his Paris Masters opener against fellow American Taylor Fritz.

The early support has been for Tiafoe, who leads Fritz 3-1 in their personal series and played pretty well on trips to Antwerp and Basel.

Tiafoe, who still has the NextGen Finals to look forward to, is pretty handy on any surface, indoor or outdoor. But there's a chance that Fritz, who won their latest clash in straight sets, may soon burst through properly at a higher level.

Clearly that's unlikely to happen this week – the Californian has been traded at prices up to 450 on Betfair’s exchange for a reason.

But while Fritz is a laconic operator, the 22-year-old perhaps ought to be stepping forward in the near future and using his innate power to see off opponents in decent fashion.

For many of the field this week, Paris-Bercy represents the last chance of the season to get some competitive matches under their belt.

Fritz defeated Sunday's Vienna champion Dominic Thiem in the Laver Cup last month and that tells you what he is capable of.

Punters can back Fritz at a shade of odds-against to win the match but he may be even better value with a handicap start of 2.5 games.

Grigor Dimitrov was playing some blinding tennis earlier in the campaign and the Bulgarian may be worth considering against inexperienced Ugo Humbert, while it shows how low Kyle Edmund's star has fallen that he is just about shading market leadership against Ricardas Berankis.

In the WTA Finals Shenzhen, Red Group match-one winners Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty go head-to-head with day-one losers Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic meeting in the other singles clash.

Osaka will be aware of the need to beat Barty because her last round-robin outing is against Bencic, who leads the Japanese 4-1 in their series.
