ATP Madrid: first round betting preview, tips and TV details
Fabio Fognini can master British number one Kyle Edmund
TV: Amazon Prime, from 11.30am Monday
Fabio Fognini mastered a classy field when claiming silverware in Monte Carlo last month and he can get off to a winning start in Madrid against British number one Kyle Edmund.
The Italian ace defeated Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric, king of clay Rafael Nadal and Dusan Lajovic - where he dropped just two sets in the process - on his way to glory in Monte Carlo and he should justify favouritism on his preferred slower surface.
Edmund is a class act when fully wound-up - he was a quarter-finalist in the Spanish capital last year - but his recent efforts suggest he is not yet operating to that level.
The brilliant Brit has won only one of his four clay-court matches this season. He was dumped out in three sets by Diego Schwartzman in his Monte Carlo curtain-raiser and failed to deliver at odds of 1-9 when losing in straight sets to Denis Kudla in Munich last week.
Fognini, who beat Edmund at last season’s French Open which is their only previous meeting on clay, is a cut above that opposition and is clearly in rude health.
Lajovic, Fognini’s victim in the final in Monte Carlo, can get the better of compatriot Laslo Djere.
His game is clearly in fine fettle given his recent efforts and he likes it here in Madrid. Lajovic made the quarter-finals as a qualifier last season, beating Juan Martin del Potro in the third round.
