Copa do Brazil last 16 11.30pm Wednesday

Chapecoense’s impressive top-eight finish in last year’s Serie A enabled them to qualify automatically for the last 16 of this year’s Copa do Brazil, but their domestic cup campaign could be over before it has really started, as they prepare to face an in-form Atletico Mineiro.

The hosts made the quarter-finals last year, while Chapecoense were knocked out at this stage by eventual winners Cruzeiro.

Atletico Mineiro have won two and drawn one of their opening three matches in the Brazilian top flight and should dominate a showdown with a Chapecoense side who are yet to register a league win this term, with a 5-1 thumping by Atletico Paranaense the low point.

The visitors could struggle to get a grip on the game, given that they have failed to register more than 36 per cent of the possession in their last three matches and are facing a side who like to load the midfield.

Atletico Mineiro operate in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Ricardo Oliveira, who has three goals in this season’s Copa do Brasil, spearheading their attack.

Chapecoense have shown remarkable fight to rebuild after the tragic plane crash when their squad were travelling to the Copa Sudamericana final in November 2016 and they topped their regional division, the Campeonato Catarinense, this year.

But they have struggled against better opposition in Serie A and the confident hosts are fancied to win without conceding.
