Atletico Madrid Champions League tips 2021: La Liga leaders tough to beat
Luis Suarez can continue to shine for solid Spaniards
Their defence is as solid as ever despite a change of shape from a back four to a three, affording even more protection to goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world. Luis Suarez has been outstanding up front.
It is not easy to pick holes in a side who have dominated La Liga but Atleti may be a little too reliant on Suarez in attack. They scored seven goals in the Champions League group stage, the fewest of the 16 qualifiers.
Atleti struggled for goals last season but their acquisition of Suarez has proved to be an inspired move.
Atletico had looked a team in decline when finishing a distant third in last season's La Liga title race but they have been outstanding this term and are on course to win the league for the first time since 2013-14.
They were gutted to lose key midfielder Thomas Partey to Arsenal towards the end of the long summer transfer window, but it hasn't affected them and the arrival of Suarez has given them a different dimension in attack.
Atleti are almost always tough to beat and the match-winning qualities of Suarez make them genuine contenders although the round-of-16 tie with Chelsea could go either way.
3-5-2: Oblak: Savic, Gimenez, Hermoso; Trippier, Llorente, Koke, Lemar, Carrasco; Suarez, Felix.
