Monday betting preview

Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying stage ends on Monday as hosts Cameroon defend their 100 per cent record against Cape Verde. Elsewhere, Burkina Faso have a great chance to book their place in the knockout stage when they take on Ethiopia, who have lost both of their group matches.

Cape Verde v Cameroon

Sky Sports Football, 4pm Monday

The pressure is on for hosts Cameroon to have a successful Africa Cup of Nations and they have had few problems living up to expectations with wins in their opening two matches.

The Indomitable Lions did receive a bit of a jolt when they fell behind to an early Ethiopia last goal on Thursday but two goals apiece from Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar ensured their place in the knockout stage.

That success was their sixth on the bounce and confidence levels must be sky high as they prepare to take on Cape Verde in their final Group A clash, especially with Aboubakar having already scored four times in the tournament.

Cape Verde are not without a chance of qualifying despite a 1-0 defeat against Burkina Faso in which they were perhaps unlucky not to have earned a point.

The Islanders should be buoyed by the 3-1 victory they posted over Cameroon in March, but it looks a big ask for them to halt the hosts, especially as their 1-0 win over Ethiopia was against a team who had defender Yared Bayeh sent off after just 12 minutes.

It is also worth bearing in mind their victory in the last meeting came shortly after Cameroon had recently suffered poor defeats to Morocco and Guinea.

Cape Verde will have to be positive and could provide their opponents with gaps to exploit, so the best tactic could be to back Cameroon to score at least twice, which they have done in four of their last five home matches.

Burkina Faso v Ethiopia

Sky Sports Premier League, 4pm Monday

Avoiding defeat against Ethiopia should be enough to take Burkina Faso through to the knockout stage after their 1-0 win over Cape Verde, which came courtesy of a goal from Hassane Bande, who got his chance after Aston Villa's Bertrand Traore tested positive for Covid.

Traore is set to miss out again but Burkina Faso should have enough to get the job done and they have suffered just one defeat in their last ten matches.

Ethiopia traditionally find it hard to get out of the group stage and may struggle to land a blow.

However Baye's return from suspension may make them more solid at the back and prevent Burkina Faso running riot.
