Woods season over after fracturing pelvis in Huntingdon fall

Kielan Woods's season is over after the jockey broke his pelvis and dislocated a hip following a fall at Huntingdon on Monday.

Woods has enjoyed his best season – riding 27 winners against his previous best of 25 in the last campaign - but said he was gutted as the injury, which could sideline him for three months at the minimum, would stop him reaching 30.

The 24-year-old, who rides mainly for Graeme McPherson, Ben Case and Alex Hales, was aboard Bare Necessities for Shaun Lycett in the 2m handicap hurdle at Huntingdon when the seven-year-old, who "seemed fine" according to his trainer on Tuesday morning, fell at the second.

"I dislocated a hip, which has been put back in and shattered my pelvis," Woods said on Tuesday. "I'm in a hospital in Huntingdon, but am getting moved to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge later to get operated on.

"When I hit the ground I knew it was broken and it was very painful. I've broken a lot of bones, but it's as sore a one as I've done."

Woods, who had been looking forward to riding the promising Skipthecuddles at the Punchestown festival, added: "I'm absolutely gutted I won't get to 30 winners. I was desperate to get to 30, but things could be worse."
