Winx set for second barrier trial with leading sprinter Redzel at Rosehill
Riding arrangements are up in the air but Winx's preparations for her return to action will continue on Monday when she takes in a second barrier trial with leading sprinter Redzel.
The similarly Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart and Foxplay are among the other Group 1 winners set to line up in the latest stellar barrier trial at Rosehill, after Winx and Redzel finished a hard-held sixth and seventh behind three-year-old Trapeze Artist in a similar workout at the track last month.
Winx is being aimed at the Apollo Stakes at Randwick a fortnight on Saturday, although there remains doubt over who will be on board in her quest to seal a 23rd consecutive victory.
Monday will have even more significance for Winx's regular rider Hugh Bowman, who has partnered the wondermare on her last 19 starts and will have his appeal against his careless riding suspension earned at Warwick Farm last month heard after the barrier trial.
Kerrin McEvoy had been touted as a replacement should Bowman fail in his appeal but will be riding Redzel in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington on the same day as Winx's return.
Champion trainer Waller told racing.com: "We'll have to see how Hugh gets on with his appeal, but if it's rejected then we'd be looking for an experienced rider and someone who'll be able to cope with the situation.
"It wouldn't be fair to choose a rider who hasn't been in a similar situation in the past – we'd need someone who could cope with the 'Winx status' and the fanfare that follows her.
"It's gone beyond racing, it's gone even beyond sport. She's become a household name."
He added: "We're fortunate we've got a pretty good horse who will cope with a new rider if that's what happens.
"She copes with all situations, be it track, distance or conditions, and she's come back very, very well, which is the most important thing.”
