1 Sea The Stars 2009
Sea The Stars powered home to give jockey Mick Kinane his third success in the race and become the first horse for 20 years to follow up victory in the 2,000 Guineas. He finished the campaign unbeaten with four further top-level wins in the Coral-Eclipse, Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc.

2 Sinndar 2000
There was an air of inevitability surrounding Sinndar, who won seven of his eight races including the Irish Derby and the Arc. He won at Epsom in typically clinical fashion as jockey Johnny Murtagh tracked the leaders before the pair finished a length clear of subsequent Arc winner Sakhee.

3 Galileo 2001
The result never looked in doubt. The season’s champion three-year-old was eased down by Kinane and still finished three and a half lengths clear of 2,000 Guineas winner Golan before going on to win the Irish Derby.

4 Golden Horn 2015
The champion three-year-old came from a long way back under Frankie Dettori to finish clear of stablemate Jack Hobbs, who won the Irish equivalent later that year. He recorded the third-fastest winning time before going on to land the Coral-Eclipse, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc.

5 New Approach 2008
Trainer Jim Bolger had not planned to run New Approach in the Derby and suggested he had been left in as a mistake. After narrowly missing out on the 2,000 Guineas and the Irish equivalent, New Approach made amends when beating Tartan Bearer by half a length. He went on to win the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and the Newmarket equivalent.

6 Workforce 2010
Workforce was a tour de force in the Derby and his seven-length winning margin was the biggest since Slip Anchor won by the same margin in 1985. The son of King’s Best had a remarkable turn of foot and still holds the Epsom track record of 2min 31.33sec. Once again ridden by Ryan Moore, he won the Arc later that year.

7 High Chaparral 2002
High Chaparral’s stablemate Hawk Wing was a strong favourite and was selected by Kinane' leaving Murtagh to ride the winner. The pair finished 12 lengths clear of Moon Ballad in third and the winner followed up in the Irish Derby before recording back-to-back victories in the Breeders' Cup Turf.

8 Authorized 2007
After drawing a blank 14 times, Frankie Dettori got off the mark in the Derby aboard Authorized for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam. Authorized was a clear favourite after winning the Dante and beat Eagle Mountain by five lengths. He enjoyed a successful return to York in the Juddmonte.

9 Australia 2014
Australia provided O’Brien with an unprecedented third consecutive Derby winner and the trainer’s fifth when beating Kingston Hill by a length and a quarter. After the race, jockey Joseph O’Brien said: “Horses don't come any easier to ride than this one. He's the best.” He landed the Irish equivalent and the Juddmonte on his next two starts.

10 Motivator 2005
Motivator followed in the footsteps of North Light by winning the Derby after landing the Dante at York. Sent off a 3-1 favourite, the son of top middle-distance sire Montjeu gave trainer Michael Bell his first victory in the Classic but did not win again.

11 Camelot 2012
Aidan and Joseph O’Brien made history when they became the first father-son combination to win the Classic. Camelot was an odds-on favourite after winning the 2,000 Guineas and beat Main Sequence by five lengths. He went on to land the Irish Derby and was narrowly denied the Triple Crown when second in the St Leger.

12 Masar 2018
Sent off at 14-1, Masar was Godolphin’s first Derby winner in their famous royal blue silks, beating Dee Ex Bee by a length and a half with 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior in fourth. The son of fellow Derby winner New Approach has not been seen since but could return in the Prince of Wales's at Royal Ascot.

13 North Light 2004
Fallon became the first jockey in 23 years to win back-to-back renewals of the race with North Light. He was narrowly beaten by Grey Swallow in the Irish equivalent and was retired the following May.

14 Harzand 2016
Harzand gave Dermot Weld and jockey Pat Smullen their first Derby victory. His participation had been in doubt until shortly before the race after he dislodged a shoe while travelling over from Ireland and had to spend some time with his affected hoof in a bucket of ice – but was still sent off 13-2 favourite. He beat Idaho to land the Irish Derby but disappointed in two starts later in the year.

15 Oath 1999
The Derby was run in cold, wet conditions and there was only one Group 1 winner in the field, with the untested Dubai Millennium starting favourite. Oath gave Sir Henry Cecil his fourth and final Derby winner. It was Oath's final victory as he was retired after finishing seventh in the King George at Ascot.

16 Ruler Of The World 2013
Ruler Of The World was sent off at 7-1 under Ryan Moore and recorded his only Group 1 victory in an 11-race career for Aidan O’Brien. He went on to make eight further starts, winning the Group 2 Prix Foy.

17 Kris Kin 2003
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Kris Kin was the first supplementary entry to win the Derby after being scratched at the start of his three-year-old campaign, but reintroduced after winning the Dee Stakes at Chester. He beat The Great Gatsby by a length under Kieren Fallon. He made three more starts at Group level, finishing 11th in the Arc on his final start.

18 Pour Moi 2011
Trained by Andre Fabre, Pour Moi became the first French winner of the race since Empery in 1976 when he beat Treasure Beach, who won the Irish Derby, by a head. He suffered a serious injury while preparing for the Arc and was retired.

19 Wings Of Eagles 2017
Wings Of Eagles caused a huge 40-1 upset when providing Padraig Beggy with a winner on his first ride in the Derby. One of six runners for O’Brien, he was generally overlooked in the betting. He finished third in the Irish Derby on his final start behind Capri.

20 Sir Percy 2006
In one of the Derby’s most dramatic finishes, Sir Percy was given the verdict in a four-way photo-finish with Dragon Dancer, Dylan Thomas and Hala Bek. Sir Percy was only 11th when the field turned into the straight and, after struggling for room, jockey Martin Dwyer found a gap up the rail, earning him the Lester Award for Flat ride of the year. Sir Percy did not win again in four starts before going to stud.
