'What a battle' - Simon Holt on the commentary that matched an epic King George
A brilliant horserace deserves a memorable call and that is exactly what Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot got from Simon Holt, whose commentary had echoes of his legendary accompaniment to Best Mate's third Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2004.
The long-serving Holt found himself bewitched by the titanic tussle between Enable and Crystal Ocean in the Qipco-sponsored midsummer classic – one he thought had all the hallmarks of epic King Georges from previous years.
"What a battle between them," Holt roared on Saturday. "Enable nearside, Crystal Ocean will not give in on the far side. They go head to head, toe to toe. She's just in front Enable, racing up to the line and she'll win a second King George! What a race – that was a horserace!"
