'We'll roll the dice again' - shock Ascot winner heads Karl Burke's biggest team
Karl Burke has already eclipsed his best year in terms of domestic prize-money and will look to continue his excellent season by sending his biggest ever team to Glorious Goodwood next week, spearheaded by shock Royal Ascot winner Holloway Boy.
Big-money offers from overseas have flooded in for Holloway Boy following his debut success in the Chesham at odds of 40-1, but the colt is set to run in co-owner Nick White's silks again in the Group 2 Japan Racing Association Vintage Stakes (2.25) on Tuesday.
"The horse remains in the same ownership and we'll roll the dice again," Burke said on Thursday. "He works tomorrow and, all being well, will turn up there on Tuesday. He hasn't done a lot of work since Ascot and just ticked away. It was a very good performance there and we're very happy with him."
Holloway Boy is 100-30 favourite for the Vintage with Coral, Paddy Power and Betfred with last week's Curragh maiden winner Hans Andersen closest in the betting at 7-2.
The son of Ulysses impressed with his size and scope when becoming a rare newcomer to win at Royal Ascot and Burke, who along with wife Elaine owns a half share with White, is aware Goodwood offers a different test.
"He's a big horse with a big stride and I'm not sure the track will play to his strengths as well as Ascot did, but he's well balanced and I think he'll handle it," said the trainer. "It's something he's got to overcome and it will be interesting to see what happens as we'll learn a lot again."
Burke has particularly excelled with his juveniles this season, also winning the Queen Mary at the royal meeting with Dramatised, and a strong team is being prepared for the Glorious meeting, where he has won three times including the 2017 Molecomb with Havana Grey.
"I've got the biggest team I've ever had going there and we're very happy with them," he said. "We're going to throw Marshman, who bolted up in a maiden at Ayr on his debut, in at the deep end in the Richmond on the Thursday, and Al Qareem goes for the Gordon Stakes on the same day. There are some nice horses and plenty of others in the handicaps."
The highly regarded Dramatised, who is unbeaten in two starts, is not among them as she has a choice of targets next month, either in France or much closer to home.
"She's in the Lowther or the Morny and she'll go for one of those," Burke said. "The Morny is the brave man's route as it's a Group 1 and she's won a Group 2 and her pedigree and CV suggest that's where we should be going.
"The Lowther is a big pull as well, as her owner Steve Parkin is a huge York fan, so it would be a very palatable second option. She's a very good filly and she'll stay the six furlongs no problem."
Such has been the level of Burke's success this year, the stable has accrued its best prize-money total in Britain at just shy of £1.5 million to go alongside the 70 winners.
"It's our best year for prize-money in Britain and we're well on target to beat the 100 winners from last year," the trainer said. "We've still got a lot of nice horses to run, particularly among the two-year-olds."
