Frodon, the prolific gelding catapulted on to the front pages in the spring after his Ryanair Chase win under Bryony Frost at the Cheltenham Festival, this weekend takes the first steps in a campaign connections hope will end in gold.

Trained by Paul Nicholls, Frodon is in line to run at Aintree in Sunday's Virgin Bet Monet's Garden Old Roan – a race he won 12 months ago before his victories in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, Cotswold Chase and Ryanair.

The Old Roan could be the race to light the fuse of the jumps season and it has attracted ten entries, including the classy Saint Calvados and Kalashnikov, a course-and-distance Grade 1 winner in April's Manifesto Novices' Chase.
