No panic required as two jockeys at the peak of their powers deliver waiting rides that are a joy to watch

For anyone who enjoys watching a jockey stay cool in seemingly dire circumstances and get their due reward, this was a very sweet weekend. At Newmarket and Pardubice, we saw two riders who kept their heads and kept making good decisions, when something much more panicky and much less effective would have been a normal response.
The Cesarewitch-winning steer given to Beylerbeyi on Saturday looked for all the world like something a wily old fox of the weighing room would deliver, perhaps in their early 50s, leading to a dozen praiseful articles along the lines of: "He's still got it!" In reality, it was the work of Billy Loughnane, who wasn't yet born when Motivator won the Derby.
My cunningly devised system for the Cesarewitch was to find something based with an Irish jumps trainer, a profile that fitted six of the previous seven winners. It turned out not to be a very helpful system on Saturday, when more than half the field would have qualified and all of them got beat.
