The Queen will not be accompanied at Royal Ascot on Wednesday by her husband Prince Philip, who was taken ill after the first day of the meeting on Tuesday.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said of the 96-year-old on Wednesday: "The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

"Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the state opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot."

The Queen was accompanied at the state opening of Parliament by her son Prince Charles, who also took his father's place in the royal procession at Ascot.
