Earthlight has shot to the head of the Cartier two-year-old colt standings following his victory in the Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last Saturday.

It was a second top-level success for the Andre Fabre-trained colt, who had earlier won Deauville’s Prix Morny and is now unbeaten in five starts.

He has moved 24 points clear of four rivals who include fellow Godolphin colt Pinatubo, who is widely acknowledged to be the season’s most exciting juvenile and has another chance to shake up the rankings when he tackles the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on October 12.

Both juveniles are sired by Shamardal, who won the Cartier two-year-old colt award in 2004.

Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe favourite Enable, who was a Cartier winner at both three and four, is currently headed by Sunday’s Longchamp rival Magical in the horse of the year and older horse categories. However, positions in both, and also in several other areas, are liable to change over a hectic weekend of top-class racing at Newmarket and in Paris.

Japan, only four points adrift of another 2018 Cartier champion, Too Darn Hot, in the three-year-old colt list, is another major player in the Arc, while Battaash could challenge Blue Point in the sprinter standings if he wins the Prix de l’Abbaye.

Cartier three-year-old filly leader Hermosa is among the entries for the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, in which she could renew her rivalry with Iridessa, who edged her out in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.

The awards, which were established in 1991, will be presented in London on the evening of Tuesday, November 12.
