Hayley Turner believes Hollie Doyle can go on to break a record she once held and the one currently in the hands of Josephine Gordon for the most winners in a year by a female jockey in Britain.

After becoming the third of her sex to ride 100 winners in a year with a double at Chelmsford on Thursday, Doyle needs six more winners in the remaining weeks of the year to top the 106 Gordon achieved in 2017, the year after she had been champion apprentice.

Turner, who was the first female to reach 100 winners in a calendar year in 2008, said: “I would like to see her do it and I think she can.

“You can see how hard she has worked over the years, putting in so much graft and getting better every year.”

Turner was flying back from the international jockeys’ challenge in South Africa when Doyle reached three figures.

“Hollie is lovely and I’ve always got on well with her and know she is no pushover,” added Turner, who still has two achievements that Doyle is chasing.

They are a Royal Ascot winner, which Turner ticked off this year with the success of Thanks Be in the Sandringham, and Group 1 successes with Dream Ahead, in the July Cup, and Margot Did, in the Nunthorpe of 2011.

Doyle, who added three Listed wins this year, is still seeking her first Group winner of any number but again Turner sees that as being around the corner.

“The hardest thing is getting on horses with the ability to win and you need a bit of backing which Hollie got this year with Archie Watson," Turner said. "Winners make your job easier and Hollie is only young and improving all the time.”
