Four things to watch out for in Britain, France and Ireland

Shenanigans seeks Listed breakthrough

Shenanigans will go in search of an elusive first success at Listed level when she lines up in the Weatherbys General Stud Book Pipalong Stakes at Pontefract (3.00) on Tuesday.

The daughter of Arcano has run three creditable races in defeat this season, finishing placed in stakes company at Kempton, Goodwood and Epsom, and she will try to secure a black-type win of her own when she faces nine rivals in this £50,000 prize.

Andrea Atzeni will return to the saddle and the pairing will break from stall six.

Varian said: “Shenanigans has run three solid races this season and a repeat of any of those efforts would see her go very close in this.

"The stiff mile will suit and she's in good form.”

On official ratings, Shenanigans has 1lb to spare with top-rated Promising Run at the weights, who has a 7lb penalty for winning twice at Group 2 level at Meydan at the start of the year.

The David Barron-trained Clon Coulis tackles a mile for the first time after staying on into fourth in the inaugural running of the Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes at Chelmsford last month.

Barron said: "This step up in trip should suit her on the evidence of her most recent run.

"It's an open race but she's a good filly and if she stays she should be in contention."

The Chris Wall-trained Marilyn may have plenty to find on official ratings but arrives on the back of a handicap hat-trick.

The Sixties Icon filly has been raised 25lb following her three wins and Wall feels it is worth chancing her in Listed company for the first time.

Wall said: "She's in the form of her life and goes particularly well on quick ground, so we felt now is the time to try her in this grade.

"It's a big step up in class but her owners like to breed their horses so it would improve her prospects no end in that regard were she to gain some black type."

Last year's Sandringham third Paco's Angel, recent Hamilton second Isabella and the unexposed Stage Name, who can be forgiven a below-par run in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom last time, could also figure in a competitive renewal.

Roy Rocket bids for Brighton hat-trick

John Berry's Roy Rocket aims for star billing for the third consecutive meeting at Brighton as the popular course favourite bids for a hat-trick in the Follow Us On Twitter @StarSports_Bet Handicap (7.10).

A four-length amateur handicap demolition job, sealed with a wave-of-the-whip celebration by rider Ross Birkett, was followed by a three-quarter-length victory under John Egan, who is the only professional to win on the grey and bids to repeat the feat despite his mount going markedly up in class.

Berry said: "It's going to be hard as we're going up a couple of classes and from a handicapping perspective he's worse off with the penalty. But we thought we either go there thinking he's taking on horses who may be too good for him or we sit at home watching a four-runner race wondering why we haven't gone.

"He's in peak form, a mile and a half on fast ground is tailor-made for him, and it will once again be lovely to see so many people at Brighton get as much joy out of him as we do."

Mulcahy out for quick follow-up on Butler

It may have come as a surprise to many that Mister Butler, a cosy winner of an opportunity handicap hurdle at Bellewstown on Saturday, was Shane Mulcahy's first success under rules, and the young rider has a golden opportunity to keep his name in lights when his mount tackles the 2m handicap hurdle (6.50) at Roscommon.

Mulcahy has been a regular rider for Denis Hogan in recent seasons and the trainer is hoping for a similar outcome, with Mister Butler reappearing quickly under a penalty.

Hogan said: “It was great for Shane on Saturday – he’s still on a high and hopefully can make it two now.

“Obviously the race comes a bit soon, but the handicapper has given him 9lb and I think he can handle the step back in distance.

“I’d have liked a longer gap between races but he handles the ground and Shane gets on well with him.”

Burke back for more at Compiegne

Karl Burke and jockey Tony Piccone enjoyed Group 1 success in the Prix Morny with Unfortunately last year and team up again at Compiegne.

The Spigot Lodge trainer runs two-time novice stakes third Mount Ararat in the €55,000 Listed Prix Pellas, at 11.55am BST, and London Protocol, who bids for back-to-back wins in the Prix de Vignemont Conditions Stakes (1.05pm).
