Racing took a small step in the fight to deal with staff problems when the first 'riding coaches' were presented with their qualifications at York.

They were on a pilot scheme, run by the Northern Racing College on behalf of the BHA, which was staged in the wake of a survey this year in which 38 per cent of trainers stated that recruitment, skills and retention issues are a problem for their business.
