Jet-setting George – top apprentice Wood joins Charlie Appleby's Dubai team
Leading apprentice George Wood has accepted an invitation to join Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby’s powerful operation in Dubai for the winter.
Wood, who turns 20 on Saturday, had his most successful year in 2017 with 49 winners and is hoping to pick up rides during his spell at Marmoom Stables, where he is to be based until March.
Wood has enjoyed success in the Godolphin silks, most notably when winning the November Handicap on Prize Money in 2016, and also won on his only ride for Appleby at Brighton in September.
Attached to the James Fanshawe stable, Wood is hoping to gain experience in Dubai but is mindful that, on 87 career wins, he has only eight winners left until he loses his 3lb claim.
Wood, who landed the Cambridgeshire on 50-1 shot Dolphin Vista at Newmarket in September, said yesterday: “I arrived in Dubai a few days ago and it’s a lovely place and a great experience for me.
“I’m sure I’ll learn a lot out here and I’m looking forward to sitting on some of Charlie’s nice horses at Marmoom Stables.”
On his new base, which has an oval training track and pristine grass gallops, Wood added: "I've never seen anything like this place. It's right out in the desert and a great place for the horses as it's so quiet and peaceful. The track is beautiful too, a lovely surface."
On the prospect of riding at Meydan for the first time, Wood added: "It will be nice to get a ride or two out here but I'm in no hurry as I'm trying to hold on to my claim. There are an exciting couple of months ahead."
