Tonight's racing: three to keep an eye on at Newcastle
The attention has been on the jumps this afternoon but now all eyes are on the Flat with Newcastle staging an eight-race card starting at 5.45. Sprinters feature in the highlight 6f handicap (7.45) but there is a good spread of handicaps, maidens and a claimer to get stuck into through the evening.
Ambient 7.15 Newcastle
It’s worth taking note when Roger Varian sends a runner to Newcastle. The Newmarket trainer boasts a 22 per cent strike-rate at the track this year, with four winners from 18 runners, and saddles Ambient in this juvenile novice median auction stakes. The son of Born To Sea has the ability to win this contest if returning to the form of his debut second at Lingfield in August.
Tropics 7.45 Newcastle
Hertfordshire trainer Dean Ivory saddles his second and third runner on the all-weather at Newcastle with 2015 July Cup runner-up Tropics and topweight Kadrizzi lining up in the feature £11,500 6f handicap. Tropics ran well on his return from a six-week break when a staying-on fourth at Kempton at the start of the month and should be competitive in this open event, while Kadrizzi returns to action after 128 days off the track.
Breathoffreshair 9.15 Newcastle
Shrewd placing from Richard Guest ensures Breathoffreshair escapes a penalty for his apprentice handicap success at the track six days ago as he bids for a hat-trick in the finale. The three-year-old son of Bated Breath is likely to be busy in the next 24 hours as he also holds an engagement at Southwell on Friday.
