Grand National-winning trainer Jimmy Mangan has been dealt a huge blow with stable star Castlebrook out for the season.

The seven-year-old suffered a hock injury on Saturday, with Mangan revealing that vets are closely monitoring his situation.

The chaser had been in the form of his life this season and was being aimed at Thursday's Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park.

One of the biggest horses in training, Castlebrook opened his account in a Wexford beginners' chase in October and made the frame in a conditions chase at Gowran Park before finishing third to Faugheen in a Grade 1 novice chase at Limerick over Christmas.

Mangan said on Sunday: "He's down in Fethard Equine Centre at the minute. They will be looking at him in more detail on Monday and we're not sure how serious the injury is yet.

"He hurt his hind leg, injured his hock more than anything, and that's all I can say at the minute.

"I was told he had a good night last night but as regards how serious it is, we're not sure yet. He was better than ever this season and we were crying out for three miles with him. It's disappointing."
