All you need for the day including latest going as Catterick takes centre stage

It is an important day at Catterick, where the big jumps race of the year, the North Yorkshire Grand National (2.45) is the main focus.

A field of six may seem a little disappointing for a race of its type, but it poses a fascinating conundrum for punters as several appear to have been targeted for the race. Alternatively, just stick with Sue Smith as she's won it for the last three years and saddles Sharp Response.

Leicester is the other jumps meeting in Britain today, with Clonmel taking place in Ireland. On the all-weather, Southwell in the afternoon is followed by Chelmsford in the evening.

Going report

Clonmel (first race 12.15)
Yielding (hurdle) and good to yielding (chase)

Catterick (12.25)
Good, good to firm in places

Leicester (12.35)
Chase- good to firm (good to soft on the Flat course crossings), Hurdle - home straight good to soft

Southwell (12.45)
Standard

Chelmsford (4.15)
Standard

What to read

The Gold Cup declarations are out and at least one owner thinks his horse is overpriced. Get the latest on the likely next Japanese raider in the Arc.

The best of Racing Post Sport

It is the Sony Open in Hawaii this week. Read Steve Palmer's preview, or just listen to the Postcast below.

Elsewhere, Bruce Millington is about to give best in his battle against what he sees as a blight on modern sport.

Final thought

The strength of Ireland's Gold Cup challenge really does contrast with the lack of depth in Britain's ranks. Phil Martin is perhaps being optimistic about Definitly Red's chances, and as the owner he is well entitled to be, yet at 33-1 the Charlie Hall winner is generally fifth choice among those who will not have to travel to Cheltenham by boat.
