Three to look out for on Newcastle's evening card
There are eight races on the Tapeta at Newcastle on Tuesday evening, with the last race at 9.10. The quality is what would be expected, with a smattering of unexposed runners in among the usual faces. Here are three runners we should learn more about this evening
Champagne Pink 6.10
There is something of a tug-of-war in Champagne Pink's pedigree: she is by Teofilo, whose progeny tend to stay middle-distances, but her dam's side is all speed. The evidence of her five runs would seem to suggest her sire is winning out. She ran her best race over an extended mile on Wolverhampton's Tapeta last time and was never nearer than at the finish. She sticks with the Tapeta tonight at Newcastle, but more interestingly she is up to 1m2f. If the visual impressions match up with her sire's influence, she should run another personal best.
Bahkit has proved himself over the trip after making all at Ripon last time when he caused a 66-1 shock. The big doubt is the Tapeta surface, on which he is unraced – indeed, this will be his all-weather debut. He was off for over a year before Ripon and had been pulled out on firmer ground, so the assumption is he has had an issue or two, but the form of his win looks fine allowing for the idiosyncrasies of the track. If flat Tapeta suits as well as rolling turf, he should go close again.
Express Lady 9.10
There is almost certainly potential in Express Lady above and beyond a BHA rating of 73 and she hinted at as much when making a winning debut at Lingfield in May. The question is for how long will her inexperience continue to mask her undoubted ability? We saw that on her second start, also at Lingfield, when she pulled too hard and was beaten when stumbling late on. A hood-and-tongue tie have been fitted here, presumably to calm her down. If they have the desired effect, she should show herself above this grade.
