Three obstacles that lie between Enable and Breeders' Cup glory
Two-time Arc heroine Enable has been given the green light to run in the Breeders' Cup Turf, but the 1m4f contest at Churchill Downs on November 3 will be a new and unique test for the superstar four-year-old filly. Here's what lies in store . . .
The track
The orientation of the Churchill Downs track is left-handed and tight, with the turf course, which sits inside the dirt track, seven furlongs long, with tight bends at the end of the two straights. Although it will supply Enable with new questions to answer, it is worth remembering she handled Epsom superbly, as well as winning around Chester – a tight track – on just her third start.
The travel
The effects of a lengthy journey to the Breeders' Cup should never be underestimated, but with more and more horses making the trip across the pond in recent years, the logistics and potential pitfalls are well known. Competing horses will travel many days in advance, usually completing their final gallops at the host track.
