Three interesting runners to note at Chelmsford
After the fanfare of Meydan, Chelmsford takes over in the evening, and while winning connections will be paid less for a winner than the victors in Dubai, punters will not . . .
Communique
6.15
Warburton has race fitness and Well Suited has promise, but Communique arrives with the tangibles of previous form and course form. He finished second twice in the space of a fortnight in October, the second occasion over course and distance. He was worn down late there, but still finished clear of the rest and, if anything, this trip is likely to prove on the sharp side in the long run. If he is fit to go on his return, and there is little reason for him not being so, he should take plenty of beating.
Leoro
6.45
Charlie Mann takes quite a few horses from Germany and tries to turn them into hurdlers. Leoro is an exception in two ways: first, he didn't really take to the job for which he was bought; and second, he is bred to be better than most of Mann's German recruits.
That promise in his pedigree adds an extra bit of interest to Leoro's win at Wolverhampton last time, which was convincing by any measure apart from maybe the narrowing distance at the line, which was excusable given how early he was sent on. Up 5lb in the weights and two furlongs in trip, he has a good chance to follow up, especially with an otherwise leading rival Temasek Star having refused to race here on Thursday.
Alfonso Manana
8.45
If Malaysian Boleh wins the opener at 5.45, look out for this four-year-old shortening at the other end of the card. He was one place ahead of that rival when he was last seen finishing second here this month.
Alfonso Manana's winning rate is the main drawback and he has never won a handicap, but has shown the form to win off a mark of 59 and looks to have perhaps his best opportunity here.
