'There's no point getting into the profession if it isn't something you want'
The Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards recognise excellence in the industry and with nominations now open the most recent winners reflect on their achievement. Sarah Taylor, general manager of Mickley Stud in Shropshire, was a winner in this year's stud staff category
What makes for good stud staff?
You need to work hard and be dedicated to your craft. There's no point getting into the profession if it isn't something you want to do.
What is the best thing about your job?
Playing such a big part in a foal's development is incredibly rewarding, especially when you see the horses reach the racetrack. It's truly satisfying knowing you've made a difference.
What's the biggest challenge facing stud/stable staff?
As we know the industry is suffering from a staff shortage across the board. Not only is getting people into the industry proving tough but retaining them is an issue that needs addressing.
What one thing would you change about your job?
There's nothing I'd change about my role, I thoroughly enjoy it.
What did it mean to you to be nominated?
It was a privilege to even be nominated so to win it was even better. I was quite shocked because I thought the girl I was competing against was going to be victorious.
How important are these awards?
It's vital that the awards continue because hard work needs to be recognised to keep people motivated. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes before a horse can even get to a racetrack.
