Harswell Angel caused a dramatic shock when narrowly denying 2-7 favourite Night Mission in the 6f novice sprint, then survived a lengthy stewards' inquiry.

The Roger Fell-trained juvenile was 14-1 to get off the mark at the third attempt and despite drifting badly left inside the final furlong towards the far-side rail, he held on by a neck. The stewards deemed the runner-up had not lost momentum as his rider, Kevin Stott, was not forced to stop riding.

Fell said: "I wasn't there, but I watched it on my phone and the only reason I can think of why we've kept the race is that we didn't touch the other horse in the last furlong, but it was a nervy wait.

"The horse had really bad colic earlier in the year. He had all sorts of problems, but we chucked him in a field for a bit and it seems to have worked."

The stewards' report said: "The interference was found to be accidental in that Harswell Angel was hanging left-handed despite Mark Winn’s best efforts to correct the gelding, carrying Night Mission off its intended line."

Landmark day

Joshua Brown enjoyed the first winner of his career on Jam Lass in the 1m2f amateur jockeys' handicap.

The 25-1 shock winner capped a 259-1 double for trainer Peter Niven, who also took the 6f handicap with 9-1 shot Sugar Baby.

Head strikes again

Flamborough Head notched a second track success in division one of the 7f handicap. His trainer Tim Easterby also struck with Beyond The Bar in the mile novice.
