A ten-strong BHA board has become the sport's ultimate decision-making body as part of a new governance structure for British racing. So who are those running the sport?


Joe Saumarez Smith: Chair. Appointed as a non-executive director of the BHA in December 2014. Succeeded Annamarie Phelps as chair in June and is due to step down in September next year. Other roles include being chair of the gambling strategy group, which will now be overseen by the newly formed commercial committee. Has the casting vote on the board.

Julie Harrington: BHA chief executive since January 2021 and a member of the commercial committee. A former senior executive of Northern Racing, one of the forerunners of Arena Racing Company, she had previously been a BHA board member, joining at the same time as Saumarez Smith. Rejoined the BHA from British Cycling, where she had been chief executive.
