For the first time since 2007, when future 1,000 Guineas heroine Natagora held off subsequent July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit, Saturday’s Cheveley Park Stakes winner has been rated higher than the winner of the Middle Park. The 2021 renewal has something to live up to when it comes to its impact on the future, but a dramatic surge down the stands’ rail saw Tenebrism (117) post the race’s joint highest winning Racing Post Rating of the last decade.

Much like the pacesetting runner-up Flotus (114) and Friday’s Rockfel winner Hello You (108), Tenebrism had stood out among the juvenile fillies pre-Royal Ascot, but unlike that pair she had been unable to build on her debut promise due to injury. For a first start since March, and her second overall, this was a notable achievement.

Even when taking into account the possible rail bias and a disappointing no-show from favourite Sacred Bridge, a negative view is hard to justify. Sandrine (105) and Desert Dreamer (102), back in third and fifth, give the form a solid look.
