The one race you don't want to miss on Sunday as Limato bids to bounce back

The reliability of the formbook will be tested to the full in the Supreme Stakes, which could be considered a carbon copy of the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket two months ago.

That Group 3 proved to be a confidence-booster for former July Cup winner Limato, who led home three rivals that reoppose on worse terms in this race.

Limato was last seen bringing up the rear in this year’s July Cup, but trainer Henry Candy said: “I'm very happy with the old boy. I think he just got dispirited by the speed they were going in the July Cup last time.

“His race before that was very good and the ground should be good to firm, which will be perfect for him.”

The seven-year-old, who bids for a 14th win in a career that has seen him earn more than £1.3 million in prize-money, is reunited with an old ally in the form of James Doyle, who enjoyed success on him back in 2015.

Candy added: “James [Doyle] rode him in his early days and was keen to get back on board.”

Suedois tries again against old foes

David O’Meara sends Suedois to Goodwood for another go at his nemesis Limato, who beat him to win his July Cup in 2016, in the Prix de la Foret at Chantilly and in the Criterion this year, when he beaten less than a length in third.

The Criterion form has been boosted when runner-up Glorious Journey landed the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes last weekend, and Suedois has since proven unlucky when not beaten far in the Lennox at Glorious Goodwood.

O’Meara said: “He ran well in the Lennox again this year when not getting the run of the race. He’s in good form.”

Hannon could have new Champion

Richard Hannon is hoping to reign supreme for the second year running and is doubly represented with last year’s winner Anna Nerium and Fox Champion, who drops down from Group 1 company.

Hannon said of the latter: “It’s a big step down in class for Fox Champion, having run pretty well in two Group 1s. He will be held up a bit more than recently to give him more of a chance.”

It would be dangerous to underestimate Anna Nerium, who was behind stablemate Billesdon Brook in her 1,000 Guineas but like that Classic winner, who came good again at Goodwood’s festival, this filly likes the Sussex track.

Hannon added: “Anna Nerium loves it around Goodwood and she’s been in form. She is not going to get the ground she wants, although she is effective on faster ground.”
