Aussie Lyrics, a spare ride for Batchelor last year, seeks to become the first horse since Whitworth 32 years ago to complete a hat-trick of triumphs in the La Vallette Jersey Derby, with Alice Mills in the saddle this time.

However, both Aussie Lyrics and Batchelor's mount Flutterbee – who gave the jockey his 300th Jersey winner this year – face a stiff task against the Philip Prince-ridden Black Night, rated only 73 in Britain but an impressive winner of this season's Jersey Guineas.

"I haven't seen Black Night come off the bridle yet," said Batchelor. "I've been racing on the island for ten years now and he's the best Flat horse I've seen racing there. He has made other horses look ordinary.

"On all known form Flutterbee can't win but she should probably be placed."

Benoordenhout and Gabster also line up in a five-runner event worth £2,380 to the winner.
