Sun shines on Nottingham as absentees roll in for Thursday card
The beautiful weather dominating Britain over the past week has had an unwelcome knock-on effect to the card at Nottingham with 18 non-runners on Thursday’s card.
While field sizes for the eight-race card remain robust, every race bar one has at least one non-runner with the 1m6f handicap (2.45) down to three each-way places from four, and the 1m2f fillies’ handicap (4.30) now two each-way places from three.
Seven of the 18 runners have been taken out due to the good, good to firm in places ground. The going had been on the soft side when horses were declared on Tuesday.
Jane Hedley, clerk of the course, said: “The going is good, good to firm in places. It’s lovely ground for horses wanting it on the fast side of good.
“They entered on ground that was soft, good to soft in places and declared on good, good to soft ground with a dry forecast.”
She added: “It’s always the case with large fields that you would expect a few non-runners, and some trainers may have expected the ground to dry a little slower.”
Nottingham is one of six fixtures taking place in Britain and Ireland on Thursday. There are three non-runners at Haydock and Newbury, four at Uttoxeter and one at Fontwell.
