'Stuff of dreams' for layers as outsider holds fancied runners
Bookmakers were unanimously hailing one of "the best Derby results in living memory" after 40-1 outsider Wings Of Eagles swooped late to foil market leaders Cliffs Of Moher, Cracksman and Eminent.
Betfair's Barry Orr said: ''It was grim viewing a furlong out with all our significant losers looking set to fight out the finish, so, as you can imagine, there was a huge sigh of relief when Wings Of Eagles swooped high and wide to give us one of the best Derby results in living memory.''
The result was described as "the stuff of dreams" by Coral's David Stevens, who said: "Victory for Cracksman or Permian were the results we really didn't want, but to see the 40-1 shot come home in front in the biggest race of the Flat season was the stuff of dreams for the layers."
The result couldn't have been scripted any better according to Betway's Alan Alger, who said: "A 40-1 shot winning the Derby with two horses that weren't attractive in the each-way betting in behind is absolutely perfect for us.
"If we could have written down the result of the race before it started that's more or less exactly what we would have gone for!"
Traders at William Hill were particularly delighted to see Cliffs Of Moher (5-1 SP) and Cracksman (7-2) overhauled as as they had offered a standout 6-1 on both horses in the morning.
Spokesman Rupert Adams said: "All we needed to do was to get the front two [Cracksman and Cliffs Of Moher] beaten and amazingly that has happened. We will look back on the 2017 Derby as one to remember."
Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said the result provided bookmakers with a "multi-million pound swing".
