Stobart Rail announced as new backer of Northumberland Plate
The Northumberland Plate, Newcastle's signature race for the last 135 years, is to be sponsored for the next two runnings by Stobart Rail. Stobart Rail is taking over from John Smith's which has sponsored the contest for the last 14 years.
Known locally as the Pitmen's Derby, the valuable 2m handicap was won last year by subsequent Melbourne Cup eighth Antiquarium.
Stobart Rail managing director Kirk Taylor said: "We are delighted to be associated with Newcastle racecourse, especially since we designed and constructed the new all-weather track.
"The Northumberland Plate is a unique race with national reach. It represents a perfect partnership for Stobart Rail and our national ambitions."
The £150,000 prize will take place on Saturday, July 1, this season, with the remainder of the races across the festival, including the £75,000 Northumberland Vase, continued to be sponsored by Betfred.
Newcastle executive director David Williamson said "As long term supporters of British racing, and an integral part of the project team that delivered the world class all-weather track at Newcastle, we are really pleased to be working with Stobart Rail."
