Star-studded line-up for Hurling For Cancer's tenth anniversary
Jim Bolger and Davy Russell have revealed their teams for one of the most anticipated clashes of the GAA calendar, as Hurling For Cancer takes centre stage at St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge on August 16.
A plethora of sports stars, including some of Ireland’s top hurlers and jockeys, have been confirmed for the contest which begins at 6pm, with all proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society.
Grand National-winning jockey Rachael Blackmore is among a host of famous faces lending a hand as side-line officials and umpires, with the likes of Nina Carberry, Paul McGrath, Ted Walsh, Niall Quinn, Miriam O’Callaghan and Dublin footballer John Small also helping out.
On the playing field, Bolger has once again called upon the services of former professional footballer Stephen Hunt, as well as hurling and camogie stars including TJ Reid, Jackie Tyrell, Charlie Carter, Eddie Brennan, Grace and Miriam Walsh. Liam Griffin and Liam Cahill will manage Bolger's team.
Russell has drafted in Classic-winning jockey Shane Foley and top amateur Jamie Codd for his squad, as well as comedy duo The 2 Johnnies. Hurling and camogie legends including Patrick Horgan, Seamus Harnedy, Brendan Cummins, TJ Ryan, Ashling Thompson and Katie Nolan will also line out for Russell’s charges, who will be coached by Brian Cody and Ursula Jacob.
Bolger said: “This is the first time Hurling For Cancer Research has been held after the hurling championship final and it has certainly worked in our favour. We have a dream line-up of hurlers and sports stars; it will definitely be the best game we have ever had. We are really looking forward to it.”
Tickets cost just €10 for adults and €15 for families and can be purchased online at , while tickets will also be available at the gate.
Russell added: “Both team sheets read like a roll of honour and it’s a fitting tribute to mark the tenth Hurling For Cancer Research match. I’m honoured that Brian Cody will grace the side-lines one final time to manage my team. It’s going to be a cracker of a game and no quarter will be given. It is a brilliant evening out for all the family for a very worthy cause, so I hope to see a huge crowd.”
To date, the event has raised €1 million to fund the Irish Cancer Society’s innovative cancer research projects.
Rosemary Simmon, head of fundraising for the Irish Cancer Society, added: “The Hurling for Cancer Research match has always been known for its star line-ups, but Jim and Davy have done an incredible job this year to amass such high-calibre teams given the championship’s early finish.”
