Star on show: world's best horse Enable to top bill at Newmarket Open Weekend
Racegoers turned up in their droves to bid a British racecourse farewell to Enable at York last week, but fans of the dual Arc winner will get one last chance to see the ten-time Group 1 winner in the flesh on these shores as she is set to appear at the Henry Cecil Open Weekend in Newmarket next month.
The five-year-old will canter on Warren Hill – as will a host of John Gosden's top horses, including Stradivarius – to kick off proceedings on the second day of the annual event on Sunday, September 22.
Enable, whose Darley Yorkshire Oaks victory on the Knavesmire last week took her to the top of the unofficial world rankings on a mark of 128, appeared in a similar capacity two years ago, but bad weather forced Gosden to pull the plug on her public appearance 12 months ago to the disappointment of many.
Gosden said: "All being well Enable and all of the top horses will canter at the open weekend as it's an event we like to support. We couldn't really entertain opening the yard up to the public as the numbers would be overwhelming, so this is the best way for people to see them. Hopefully, the weather will be better than last year when there was heavy rain and we had to pull out."
The open weekend, which takes place on September 21-22, has this year been renamed the Henry Cecil Open Weekend to celebrate the life of the iconic and much-loved trainer. The three-year partnership, which will begin this year, is supported by a group of previous owners of Sir Henry's and will help raise money for local charities.
Since the return of the open weekend to Newmarket in 2012 more than £250,000 has been raised for local and racing charities, including £115,000 for the Racing Welfare Newmarket housing project. As part of this project renovation of MacDonald Buchanan House will begin this month, providing 18 units of high-quality accommodation for young racing staff in the town.
During the open weekend, visitors can tour a number of Newmarket’s finest equine sites, go racing at the Rowley Mile racecourse and visit the yards of a host of leading Newmarket trainers.
Dawn Goodfellow, chief executive of Racing Welfare, said: "The Henry Cecil Open Weekend is a standout occasion in the calendar each year and is one we are very grateful to benefit from.
"The renovation of MacDonald Buchanan House is a key project in the town and funds raised by the event will help us in our aim to ensure that young people working in racing have the best possible start to their careers by the provision of high-quality, safe accommodation.
"We hope the Henry Cecil Open Weekend is a huge success this year and thank the committee for their ongoing support of Racing Welfare."
