Spanish on a Mission in Stateside bid for Spencer and Simcock

Jamie Spencer on Spanish Mission after winning at Newmarket this season

Newmarket trainer David Simcock and jockey Jamie Spencer will bid for Stateside glory when Spanish Mission lines up for the 1m4f Jockey Club Derby Invitational Stakes (10.47pm BST) at Belmont Park on Saturday evening.

On his latest start the three-year-old stayed on strongly to finish a close third behind Nayef Road in the Qatar Gordon Stakes at Goodwood last month, and afterwards Simcock was initially toying with the option of aiming his charge at the St Leger rather than journeying to Belmont Park.

However, Simcock said: "With his American connections, it's been a race we've had in mind since the beginning of the season and although we had other options, including the St Leger, we've decided to stick with it.

"It's very valuable and won't be as strong as a Group 1 in Europe. It won't be an ideal track for him as it will be tighter than what he's used to, but he's a talented horse on his day and he stays well.

"He handles fast ground very well and I'd be a little concerned if it went soft, but they've only had bits of pieces of rain so far."
