Sir Keir Starmer Labour appointment positive for racing says BHA

The formation of the Labour Party shadow cabinet under new leader Sir Keir Starmer will be closely monitored by the BHA with racing's rulemakers keen to maintain a positive relationship with the official opposition.

Starmer, 57, was elected to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader on Saturday by members and related supporters, and vowed to take the party "into a new era with confidence and hope".

A former barrister specialising in Human Rights law, Starmer undertook legal work in an advisory capacity for the Jockey Club, among other organisations, prior to being appointed Director of Public Prosecutions in 2008. In 2014, he was knighted for "services to law and criminal justice".
