Show me the money! Racing cannot rely on history and heritage warns York chief

After York said farewell on Saturday to the last of 350,000 racegoers and countless smart horses to visit in 2018, chief executive William Derby has warned Britain cannot take the quality of its racing for granted.

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe one-two Enable and Sea Of Class won the last two runnings of the Yorkshire Oaks, while Roaring Lion was a dual winner on the Knavesmire this season, where prize-money was boosted from £7.6 million to £8.2m.

But Derby stressed that keeping the quality high will become even more difficult as the sport faces funding challenges.
