Bollin Joan was completely ignored in the betting following a lacklustre showing on fast ground at Ayr 13 days earlier, but this easier surface was much more to her liking and she ran creditably.
Going easily in rear, the Tim Easterby-trained mare repeatedly saw her momentum checked in the final quarter-mile and would have finished much closer than her eventual four-length sixth granted a clear run.
Rated just 1lb above her last winning mark, she has done most of her winning over 1m4f and has a good record at this time of year. Having won at Catterick in mid-October last season on soft ground, a repeat could very much be on the cards. [Marcus Buckland]

Hazel had the distinction of edging out this season's Prix de Diane winner Joan Of Arc at Dundalk last November when trained by Donnacha O'Brien but hasn't matched that sort of performance since.
However, she ran much better on her third start for Dave Loughnane when fourth at Wolverhampton on her penultimate start and stepped up again here, travelling nicely and staying on well to go down by just a neck at the line.
She has clearly dropped to a mark she can win off, so is one to watch out for when she does reappear. [David Bellingham]

There was no mistaking the promise shown by Roger Varian's newcomer First Officer, who made a good deal of ground up in the closing stages to get within striking distance of a couple of well-bred newcomers in Al Mubhir and Filistine, who were both well found in the market in the 7f maiden.
Despite a tardy start, this well-related colt ran green as soon as his rider asked him for an effort, but he got the message as soon as he hit the rising ground and was only beaten just over two lengths.
His pedigree suggests he'll be suited by a stiffer test of stamina and he's open to a good deal of improvement. He should prove equally effective on synthetics should connections go that route for his maiden or novice, and he can win in that grade before being raised in class. [Richard Young]

Atomise faced a stiff task on just her second run when taking on some smart performers in this valuable juvenile event and, with her high draw, that task became an almost impossible one.
Despite a slow start, she made up significant ground late on to finish a highly creditable sixth behind the useful Chipotle and four other previous winners.
She is much better than the bare form and with further improvement to come, she will take all the beating if dropped down in class to contest an ordinary maiden or novice event. [Colin Russell]

Having won his last three starts, most recently over a mile in a Group 3 at Longchamp, and coming back down in trip, Ancient Rome was wide early from the outside gate and then settled in last, which was further back than he was for those three wins.
That didn't prove the ideal position given how this race played out and he didn't get a clear run through, being switched more than once, but he still ran on well, just a bit too late.
Andre Fabre had said beforehand: "He would be better over an extra furlong but this gives him a chance to prep for either Saint-Cloud or the Breeders' Cup." Given what happened, this was a lovely run in the circumstances. [Ron Wood]
