KEY HORSES & QUESTIONS

Can Skelton defend crown?

Last season Dan Skelton won this race with Roksana, who went on to hold her own behind Santini and Buveur D'Air before a successful return against her own sex in the Mares' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

This time around Skelton has two chances for the valuable contest, with £24,760 on offer to the winner. Of the pair, Etamine Du Cochet is regarded by bookmakers as the more likely contender, and Skelton is hoping she will show her best form.

He said: "Etamine Du Cochet has been aimed at this for a while. She’s been more inconsistent this season than we thought she'd be, so hopefully she arrives here in her best form. If she does I can see her running very well."

Skelton's other runner is So Lonely, who sports the colours of the yard's other festival winner last week, County Hurdle hero Ch'tibello.

So Lonely would be picking a fine moment to notch a first win under rules, having been out of luck on 11 previous starts. She has not been with Skelton long, having left Charles O'Brien's yard in Ireland.

Skelton added: "We never thought So Lonely would get into the race but now she has, she has to have a go. She’s got a light weight and if she could make the most of that and run into a place we’d be delighted."

Better luck for She Mite Bite?

Nicky Henderson is the most successful trainer in this race with four wins since 2007, the most recent of which was Polly Peachum in 2013.

Although yet to enjoy victory since joining Henderson, the six-year-old She Mite Bite looked to be holding every chance at Ludlow last time, only to be brought down at the third-last.

Her trainer said: "She's been a very unlucky mare so far. She was unlucky on her last two runs, none of it's been her fault, and a race like this would be very nice."

Will The White Mouse roar for Wadham?

In the last five seasons Lucy Wadham has had 27 runners over jumps at Newbury without success, but she has a great chance to snap that streak with The White Mouse.

The five-year-old is two from three over hurdles, most recently at Doncaster at the start of the month, although she is very much regarded as a chaser for next season.

Wadham said: "She's a lovely mare who will really like the ground. She's a chaser in the making really but has done well over hurdles this season. She's in great form and we're hoping for a big run."

What they say

Jonjo O'Neill, trainer of Annie Mc
She's in good form but has plenty of weight in a competitive race. She was a bit disappointing last time so we'll hope for better.

Jeremy Scott, trainer of Our Dot's Baby
She's in fine form and is going back to where she last won. The fact she won last time probably means she's not terribly well handicapped. We're going there with a chance but I'm not going there thinking she's thrown in.

Harry Fry, trainer of Outofthisworld
She needs to bounce back from a disappointing performance last time. Nothing came to light so we’ve put cheekpieces on in the hope they relight the fire. She seems well in herself and won’t mind the drying ground.

Nick Alexander won the Rowland Meyrick Chase with Lake View Lad

Nick Alexander, trainer of Off The Hook
She's entitled to run. She's been very good this season and this is the ideal race for her. I'm hoping she'll prove well handicapped but I'd imagine so do the trainers of the other runners. She's got to improve again to be involved but her form is pretty solid.

Oliver Sherwood, trainer of Millarville
This has been the plan. She's been screaming to go up in trip, the ground won't be an issue and the track will be fine. She's an honest, genuine mare.

Alan King, trainer of Sixty's Belle
Sixty’s Belle could run well off a mark of 111. She's been progressing all season and was second at Huntingdon last time, and I think going back left-handed will suit her.
