Clash of the O'Briens in Irish Oaks has all the ingredients for a thriller

Iridessa: bids to add the Irish Oaks to her CV

Jamie Oliver would like the Kerrygold Irish Oaks. Take the second, third and fourth from the Epsom Oaks – Pink Dogwood, Fleeting and Manuela De Vega – throw in the Pretty Polly winner Iridessa and the expensively acquired final ingredient, supplemented Royal Ascot winner Star Catcher. Add a pinch of seasoning, pukka.

And it is the intrigue that makes it so appealing – you just do not know quite how it will turn out.

Joseph O'Brien and his legendary sire Aidan go head-to-head. The youngster has the favourite in Iridessa, who beat her chief threat Pink Dogwood – and a host of talented older horses – by three and a half lengths in last month's Pretty Polly. She is the only Group 1 winner in the field and she carries dual honours, having landed the Fillies' Mile at two.

Every one of Joseph's five Group 1 wins on the Flat have come at the expense of his father, and should he come out on top he would be the first Irishman not named Aidan O'Brien to train the winner of the race since 2003. O'Brien snr's won five in that time and his challenge may be led by the Oaks second and Pretty Polly third Pink Dogwood, but is supplemented by the Epsom third and Ribblesdale runner-up Fleeting and her pacemaker that day Peach Tree.Part of the reason the non-Aidan-named Irish trainers have struggled in their Oaks has been the success of the British challenge, with ten winners this millennium crossing the Irish Sea. The raiding party this year is headed by John Gosden's Ribblesdale winner Star Catcher – supplemented at a cost of €40,000. She will be ridden by man of the moment Frankie Dettori.

Ralph Beckett, who famously saddled a one-two in the 2013 edition of the British equivalent, is responsible for Manuela De Vega, who was fourth at Epsom.

Gordon Lord Byron has his 100th start (4.35) on an undercard that also features Aidan O'Brien's unbeaten 2,000 Guineas hope Pistoletto (4.00), while at Doncaster the Irish Oaks theme features as Virgin Snow, the second daughter of 2010 winner Snow Fairy, makes her racecourse debut in the 6.15.

Maximum Security, first past the post in the Kentucky Derby but then demoted, contests the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational (10.49).

Fahey out to rule Super Sprint

A Richard has generally ruled in the Weatherbys Super Sprint, with Richard Fahey bidding for his fourth win in seven years and the Richard Hannon yard seeking to take their tally of wins into double figures since the race's inception in 1991.

Between them they are responsible for eight of the 25 runners (32 per cent) and an even bigger percentage of the market with Fahey's Royal Ascot runner-up Ventura Rebel the 6-4 favourite.

If successful, Ventura Rebel would be the tenth favourite to win the race and the shortest-priced winner this century – provided he does not drift to the 2-1 price at which Monsieur Chevalier was successful in 2009.

Fahey's challenge is completed by Mighty Spirit, Show Me Show Me and Baileys In Bloom, while Hannon's runners are 20-1 or bigger with Separate, Ocasio Cortez, Audio and Bacchalot. Richard Spencer also runs two, Odyssey Girl and Dynamighty, while Karl Burke's unbeaten Never In Paris – who races in the Quiet Reflection silks – looks the best of those looking to bring an end to the rule of the Richards.

Red-hot contests for summer jump racing

Market Rasen's Hurdle and Plate are the highlight of the British summer jumps programme and that is reflected in the competitiveness of the contests.

The top three in the betting for each race won last time out and no horse brings quite the run of form into either race as Dan Skelton's Longhouse Sale – who is unbeaten in a point-to-point and seven starts under rules.

He has come a long way since his debut in May, dominating bumpers and novice hurdles, and his shrewd handler chucks him in here off a mark of 141. Should he win such a competitive race off that mark he becomes a serious prospect for the spring festival novice contests.

His main opposition appears to be another Warwickshire-based novice with a talented young trainer in Olly Murphy's St Gallen – and the two are only likely to be trading blows more often in future. Skelton also saddles the favourite in the Plate in course and distance winner Gortroe Joe, and while he has the greater strength and depth for now, Murphy is coming.
